The single most expensive mistake is preparing for the wrong destination. Below is what each route commonly asks of an internationally educated nurse or caregiver.

United Kingdom

Language: English — OET or IELTS Academic
Regulator: Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)

Commonly required

Nursing qualification and registration in India
Approved English language evidence
Computer Based Test (CBT) taken from India
Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) taken in the UK
Skilled Worker visa sponsored by the employer

Most candidates take the CBT before an employer interview and complete the OSCE after arriving.

Germany

Language: German — typically B1 to B2
Regulator: State recognition authority (Anerkennung)

Commonly required

Nursing qualification with transcripts and syllabus documents
German language certification at the level the state requires
Recognition of your qualification, often with an adaptation period or examination
Employment contract with a hospital or care facility
Work visa and residence permit

Germany rewards patience. Language preparation is the longest stage and shapes the whole timeline.

Ireland

Language: English — OET or IELTS Academic
Regulator: Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)

Commonly required

Registration decision from NMBI based on your training and experience
Approved English language evidence
Adaptation or aptitude requirements where NMBI identifies a shortfall
Employment permit sponsored by the employer

Assessment is individual, so two nurses with similar degrees can receive different conditions.

UAE and the wider GCC

Language: English — workplace proficiency
Regulator: Health authority of the emirate or country

Commonly required

Bachelor or diploma nursing qualification with clinical experience
Licensing examination set by the relevant health authority
Document attestation and credential verification
Employment offer and employer-sponsored work visa

Timelines are usually the shortest of any destination, and experience requirements are strict.

Canada

Language: English or French
Regulator: Provincial regulator, with national credential assessment

Commonly required

Credential assessment through the national assessment service
Provincial registration application
NCLEX-RN examination
Language proficiency evidence
Immigration pathway, often through a provincial or federal stream

Canada is a longer, more document-heavy route. It suits candidates planning two to three years ahead.

Australia

Language: English — OET, IELTS or PTE Academic
Regulator: Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia via AHPRA

Commonly required

Qualification assessment against Australian standards
Outcome-based assessment where a bridging requirement applies
Registration with AHPRA
Skilled or employer-sponsored visa

Registration and visa run in parallel, so document quality early on saves months later.
